Shifting Loyalties
"What about the professional soccer player?" Medio asked.
"What about him?"
"Don't you find it rather suspicious that he was always around? I think there was some complicity between him and the maricon. He came out from the police station and told us to be careful because Roberto was the carabinieri's boyfriend. Then later, he reversed himself, said we should have hurt him."
"The soccer player was a friend of the Nuco's," the BigGuy said.
"Nuco's friends deserted him," Medio replied. "Even the ex-con abandoned ship when Roberto sent the second craziest guy on the island after us."
"Nuco's friends are not always our friends," Capn said, remembering the verbal whipping he'd received from Daisy, Nuco's girlfriend, earlier in the voyage.
"Speaking of danger, your affair with the ex-con's girlfriend was problematic don't you think?" Medio said. "He was ready to feed us to the carabinieri, just to get you away from her."
"She was impressed with me, wasn't she?" the BigGuy mused.
"Another hour and she would have followed you anywhere."
The BigGuy took off his campesino hat and brushed his fingers through the thinning hair atop his head. "I think so," he agreed.
"She was making eyes at you from the beginning," Medio said. "I think she'll be heartbroken when you leave.
The BigGuy pursed his lips. "I wouldn't go quite that far, but I will say, as I've said before, the women love us here!"
"So do the males," Capn added, chuckling. |
